In light of the recent fatal shooting incident at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) Junior High School, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla urges Congress to pass legislation that would restrict first-person shooter games.
“Hindi ko sinasabi yun lang solution. Pero, hindi naman one-size-fits-all ang solusyon dito sa problema na ito. Maraming kailangang gawin,” Remulla said in a press briefing in Camp Crame last Wednesday. “I call upon Congress again to help us control and curb the use of first-person shooter games that influence these young minds.”
Remulla previously stated that chat groups on the game Roblox might have motivated the shooter in the ADZU incident. These chat groups were also the ones involved earlier this year in a failed alleged attempt to attack a school in Calabarzon by at least seven teens.
The shooter involved was identified as a 14-year-old male Grade 8 student. Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that the weapons used were allegedly a caliber .40 pistol and a caliber 9 mm pistol, both of which were owned by his father, who’s employed in the Bureau of Customs.
BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said that the shooter’s father had since been relieved from his post, as an investigation into how his child got his guns is still ongoing. A 15-year-old male Grade 10 student allegedly died before the shooter committed suicide by shooting himself.
“Ang daming kailangan gawin ang PNP. Kailangan magtulungan ang Kongreso. Kailangan magtulungan ang lahat ng may-ari ng baril,” Remulla added, as he pushed for stricter firearm regulations.
