Roblox does not have a very good reputation in terms of online safety and now with the recent events, and the continued issues with grooming and extremist recruitment in various online platforms, they have coordinated with the Philippine government to create age and identity checks. This agreement was talked about in August 27 as Philipine officials met with Roblox executives in August 27.
Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) secretary, Henry Aguda said that a Roblox team will visit the country in September to talk about the implementation of using PhilSys as a way to verify a person’s identity for the social and gaming platform.
This implementation is not new for Roblox after all they have already made a built-in age verification to access its chat features. It requires two things, a government-issued ID and a facial recognition using your device’s camera feature. With the PhilSys integration in mind it will make easier for the Roblox team to verify someone’s information and if they fail the verification they could not use the chat feature, making sure they could not influence kids and children under 18 could not participate the chat.
The company will also set up an office in the Philippines sometime by October to establish faster communication with the Philippine authorities. With these measures, alongside future talks with Meta, the Philippine government is buckling its security to ensure that the recent shootings will not be repeated again.
