With the recent school shooting incident, telecommunications companies PLDT, Globe, and Smart have decided to make their move by blocking websites that host or stream violent content, including footage of shooting incidents.
Globe General Counsel Froilan Castelo highlighted the telco's responsibility to make online communities safer, particularly for children and young people. Globe said it is ready to step up and remove websites that induce violence from its networks.
Globe also strengthened its stance against child sexual abuse and exploitation. In 2025, the company launched its anti-child exploitation campaign, which blocked 438,446 domains and URLs containing child sexual abuse and exploitation materials. It also invested around US$2.7 million in advanced content filtering and blocking systems.
As for PLDT, the company said it has already blocked over 100 websites that were found to be hosting or streaming footage of school shootings and other acts of extreme violence. The move reinforces the telcos' commitment to online safety, particularly for children and young people.
As technology continues to evolve, the telcos said they will continue coordinating with the government and local and international organizations to help curb violence online.
