Twice Momo and Nayeon from Pokémon Cards

If you were a Pokemon fan 10-20 years ago, you'd be seen as a nerd, and people would likely shy away from you. But now, it seems like it is a strong flex and that can be seen by various K-pop idols having them as an accessory.

It is no secret that nerd culture has grown over the years and now is generally accepted to the public, more so when Momo from popular K-pop group TWICE showed off her rare PSA 9 Suicune ex card from the 2003 Magma vs Aqua: Two Ambitions card pack. This card is worth $911.38 or ₱55,325.32 in a PSA 10, according to PriceCharting at the time of this article’s creation. She even drew more attention when she removed it from the slab it was in and placed it inside her phone case, gathering various kinds of attention.

Adding to the hobby's growing popularity, fellow TWICE member Nayeon flaunted her Shibuya Pikachu promo card, worth $838.01 or ₱50,871.40 in a PSA 10 according to the same source, which she also displayed in her phone case.

While it drew massive flak from the hardcore fans, thinking that they are exploiting the popularity of the hobby to garner attention, a nuanced take might be a proper call as some of them might actually be proper fans of the franchise, as we can see someone like RM posing with Psyducks and sporting a Pikachu party hat when he visited the new PokéPark Kanto in Japan alongside his fellow BTS members.

While one can have varied opinions on how the hobby will grow, one thing is for sure, the franchise is here to stay, and it can only be positive news for the genuine fans of the series.
