8 eSports Games Has Been Announced To Become Medal Events In The 19th Asian Games

For the first time ever, esports games will be played as medal events in the international stage at the Asian Games 2022. Particularly, it will be featuring 8 different esports games during the event.

Esports games were previously played as a 'demonstration' sport during the 2018 Asian Games held at Jakarta. However it will be finally making its debut as the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has announced eight esports titles that will be played as medal events at the 19th Asian Games to be held at Hangzhou, China, which will take place in September 2022. This will mark the first year the Asian Games will recognize esports as medal events.

The eight esports title to be included in the event are the following:
  • Arena of Valor Asian Games version
  • Dota 2
  • Dream Three Kingdoms 2
  • EA Sports FIFA
  • Hearthstone
  • League of Legends
  • PUBG Mobile Asian Games version
  • Street Fighter V
The Chinese versions of Arena of Valor and PUBG Mobile, Honor of Kings and Peacekeeper Elite, respectively, could serve as the Asian Games versions of these games.

According to the OCA, the Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF), based in Hong Kong, will serve as the “technical delegate” for the new discipline at the Asian Games. At the Asian Games in 2022, it will be in charge of the qualifiers, as well as the management and operations of the esports competition. There will be gold, silver, and bronze medals available for each title, for a total of 24 medals available at the upcoming continental showpiece in the world of esports. Additionally, Robot Masters and VR Sports are two more games that will be played as demonstration events at the 2022 Asian Games, which will be organized by the AESF and powered by Migu.

“We hope that this announcement allows all participating teams ample time to prepare and equip themselves ahead of the qualifying stages. I believe we have ticked all the right boxes ensuring a high level of competition which promises great viewing for enthusiasts and casuals alike. We at the OCA are looking forward to working closely with our friends at the Asian Electronic Sports Federation and the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee to ensure a successful execution of the esports event at the 2022 Asian Games," said Husain Al-Musallam, the director general of the OCA.

Although this is the first time esports have been included in the Asian Games, they have previously been included in a medal event at an international multi-sports competition. Games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Arena of Valor, Dota 2, Starcraft II, Tekken 7, and Hearthstone have previously been featured at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, another event sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee. The Philippines won gold medals in three video games: Mobile Legends, Starcraft II, and Dota 2. Thailand won the gold medals in Tekken 7 and Arena of Valor, while Malaysia took home the gold medal in the Hearthstone tournament.

There has been an increasing amount of discussion about incorporating esports into IOC events. These debates seem to erupt every four years in the run-up to the Summer Olympics. The inclusion of esports in this major event has not yet been confirmed, but the industry appears to be gaining momentum in this direction. The 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, will begin on September 10th and run until September 25th in the year 2022.
