If you're familiar with Axie Infinity then you’ll notice that something has changed with the Axies. Now, there are certain icons or symbols that you can see above their heads when they are attacked.

These symbols are called status modifiers that represent a debuff or buff. A debuff icon is a modifier that shows an Axie is negatively affected while a buff icon is a modifier that shows that an Axie is positively affected. Currently, there are 16 status modifiers in total; it was split into 3 buffs and 13 debuffs. Importantly, status modifiers can pile up or stack.

Buffs - Currently, there are 3 buffs. These are placed either by the Axie itself or by its teammates. Buffs positively affect an Axie.
  • Speed Up - increases Axies Speed by 20% for a designated time. Can stack.
  • Morale Up – Increases Axies Morale by 20% for a designated time. Can stack.
  • Attack Up – Increases Axies Attack by 20% . Stays until the next attack. Can stack.
Debuffs - Currently, debuffs take up the most number in status modifiers. These are placed by the attacker of the opposing team.
  • Stun – Axie will skip its next attack or defense. Stays until Axie tries to attack.
  • Aroma – For a designated time, all the incoming attacks will be attracted towards an Axie that has this.
  • Chill – Axie cannot enter the last stand for a designated time.
  • Fear – Axie cannot attack for a period of time.
  • Fragile – The shield will weaken and will take 200% damage for a period of time.
  • Jinx – True to its name, Axie will not have any luck and cannot score critical hits for a designated time.
  • Lethal – The Axie will always get a critical attack towards it. Stays until attacked.
  • Poison – Axie loses 3hp each turn taken (by either team). Can stack. Stays until it's removed.
  • Sleep – When an Axie has this, it cannot defend the next time it is hit. Stays until Axie tries to attack.
  • Stench – Axie is ignored when there are 2 or more targets. For a designated time.
  • Speed Down – Decreases Axies speed by 20% for a span of time. Can Stack.
  • Morale Down – Decreases Axies morale by 20% for a span of time. Can Stack.
  • Attack Down – Decreases Axies attack by 20%. Stays until the next attack. Can Stack.

Of course, it ain’t fun if a debuff doesn’t have a counter to itself. There are cards like Refresh that cures the Axie of any debuff that was given to it.
