Games in the 90’s created a nostalgic atmosphere that created the video games in its peak. The consoles such as Family Computer, Nintendo 64, Playstation, Sega Genesis served as ways for children to get up everyday and look forward to rescuing princesses, destroying villains, and becoming the hero. An example of this is the classic games of Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, Crash Bandicoot, and even other games such as Mortal Kombat. A lot would want to be a certain character they idolized. Several would go to conventions and malls just to collect their toys. Their lifestyle really had to give way to the growth of 90’s kids. Some of the games such as Super Mario Bros. and Contra paved the way for 90’s kids to become adapted into the gaming lifestyle. Super Mario Bros became the iconic video game series that created an avenue for most 90’s kids. Playing as Mario, the goal of the game was to save Princess Toadstool from the evil Bowser. Even as simple as that, most would remember the glitches, mushrooms, and even shortcuts to finish the game. Sonic the Hedgehog would require the skill of control in terms of letting the character not slip away from different blocks and holes. Crash would always be fun loving and beloved. His character mostly affects how people would play him in terms of having the option to jump, run, and stop. Most 90’s kids would view Crash as a chill relaxed Bandicoot who tries to escape from trouble. Several would wake up one day and try to act as if they were the character. Last but not the least, Mortal Kombat is a classic game that is still being made to this day. Kids back then would love the gore as if they were dueling each other and fighting off one another. That’s where most kids get their toughness. All of these would eventually be an impact for 90’s kids, with how they play the game as if they imagined themselves as the hero. These kids would enjoy spending time with each other feeling as if they were living in a different reality than the usual reality that we all live in. Sleepovers and going to people’s houses just to play all these games became the social norm for most kids of the 90’s.
Enjoying the games back then gave me a way to form relationships. I was able to have fun and cherish the times I had with the games I played. The only wish that I would like to be fulfilled is that I would want to get that same enthusiasm that I had back then to the games I play now. I guess growing up, video games with some 90’s consoles made my childhood amazing. That is why; I will continue to be a gamer. Until then, there is still so much to look forward to.
