ByteDance appoints new CEO for Moonton, the studio that developed the popular MLBB

TikTok owner ByteDance has announced that they have appointed a new CEO for Moonton Technology, the creator of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Before the appointment, the company had scaled down its video-gaming operations in the past few months.

According to the people who know about the matter, it was the former executive of the video-gaming company Perfect World, Zhang Yunfan, who will be the new lead of the Shanghai-based studio. Zhang Yunfan joined ByteDance last April.

Zhang Yunfan is known for leading Perfect World’s mobile game publishing business when he joined in 2013. He then became its chief operating officer two years later and he also supervised the Chinese version of Dota2 before finally leaving the company in 2016.

With the appointment of the new CEO, ByteDance has decided not to sell Moonton. Instead, the company will be doing a “change in strategy” for its subsidiary, according to Bloomberg. ByteDance acquired Moonton back in 2021 for US$4 billion.

Currently, it is unclear if the co-founder and former CEO of Moonton, Justin Yuan Jing will be leaving the company. Yuan established Moonton in 2014 and developed the popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The game is mainly popular in the Southeast Asia regions.
