Identity V - 1v4 Horror Mobile Game released by NetEase

NetEase released another game, Identity V, their first asymmetrical 1v4 horror-survival multiplayer game, which is rapidly becoming popular since its release on iOS last July 5, 2018, and July 11th, 2018 on Android. It has reached over 1 million downloads and is trending on the top 10 on both Google Play and App Store.

The game description gives you the summary of what you should expect in the game:

Intensive 1vs4 Asymmetrical Combats:

• Four Survivors: run from the ruthless hunter, cooperate with teammates, decode cipher machines, open the gate and escape;
• One Hunter: familiar yourself with all of your killing powers. Be ready to catch and torture your preys.

Gothic Visual Style:
• Travel back to the Victorian era and have a taste of its unique style.

Compelling Background Settings:
• You will first enter the game as a detective, who receives a mysterious letter inviting him to investigate an abandoned manor and search for a missing girl. And as you get closer and closer to the truth, you find something horrifying...

Randomized Map Adjustments
• Within every new game, the map would be altered accordingly. You will never know what’s to expect.

Select & Play Distinct Characters:
• Multiple characters to choose from, customized characters to fit your own personal strategy and get the final victory!

As you start the game you'll be presented with an introduction cutscene to the story where you play as a detective receiving a mysterious envelope. Here, you'll be able to choose your in-game name. Careful! You can only enter alpha-numeric characters.

After setting in your name, the story goes on and it's a quick dive before you can chat globally, do quick matches, or play ranked matches.

  • Most things you would need to know about the game can be found in your Diary.

  • For ranked matches, you can only play them at a certain time of the day, presented when you're queueing up for a game. You can check what's the current server time at the bottom left corner. It also has a minimum Talent/Persona Level 35 requirement, which can be found in your Diary.

  • Quick matches are where people really play at. After the story mode unlocks this feature, you'll be starting your quick matches with 6 total survivors, 1 of them is free-to-play for a few days and the Gardener survivor coming in last after you've played 2 quick matches.

  • Game mechanics: there are 4 survivors and 1 hunter; survivors struggle to escape while the hunter tries to hunt down and kill each and every survivor. Survivors have items that may help them escape and hunters have their skills to fasten the hunt for the preys. The map is also random every game.
  • As a survivor, your goal is to decipher 5 machines and enter the passcode to one of the gates, all the while evading the hunter. The most useful actions, including deciphering, require calibration--a skill check that appears randomly, hinted by a sound and visual queue before appearing. Don't worry, these skill checks aren't as hard as they seem at first try!

  • If you're ever caught, don't worry--you can try to lose the hunter by vaulting to windows (they vault slower) and by stunning them using pallets. Since survivors are relatively faster than hunters, you can gain time to run and hide from the hunter. Once the heartbeat and purple shining heart on your survivor is gone, that's a sign you're out of the hunter's radar.

  • As the last survivor alive (whether the others escaped or died), you may exit through the dungeon that acts like a trap door somewhere in the map. Colored red, it will automatically spawn in the map when your team deciphered at least 2 machines.

  • There are a total of 11 survivor characters to choose from, each with unique external traits that make them different from each other and functions for different gameplays. Most characters come with an item of their specialty, but there are also chests to loot from in every map.

  • There are also potential traits which you can earn through the Persona Web. You earn points as you play more often and you can spend those points to earn traits that will be available universally on all of your survivors.

  • As a hunter, your goal is to hunt down each survivor and hit them twice to knock them down, tie them up with balloons (cute detail for hunters, I know) and carry them to the nearest rocket chairs. They can try to struggle while you're carrying them, so make sure to hold on tight! When they're tied up, they can only escape when another teammate rescues them. They would have to heal not to leave blood trails, though.

  • Tracking survivors might be hard at first because of the gothic and cartoonish graphics, but there's a lot of help you have as a hunter. When they run, they leave a bright, red trail that looks like scratch marks. If they're injured, that adds blood trail.

  • Also, you have a constantly generating listening skill--it tracks and shows you the aura of survivors moving and doing any loud actions. You can cancel this skill to avoid using up too much charge. You can also change this skill before any game, but the other skills are unlockable through leveling up your Persona level.

  • Unlike survivors, there are only 5 hunters currently in the selection, and you can only play the most basic killer, Hell Ember, plus 1 free-to-play hunter for a few days.

  • While survivors have unique external traits, hunters have unique skills. Hell Ember, for example, can plant puppets that act as a signal and trap which alerts you when there are nearby survivors around it, and then switch places with it. After switching positions, you gain speed boost for a few seconds, accelerating your chance of catching your prey. Some other hunters have a one-hit skill that allow you to instantly down a survivor and carry it to a rocket chair.

  • Very much like survivors though, hunters also have Persona Web with traits that are shared through all your hunters.

  • Last but not the least. Survivors win when 3 or more survivors escape. Hunter wins if he kills 3 or more survivors. A draw would mean both sides only got 2 survivors out or killed, respectively.
Some facts you may or may not know about Identity V:
  1. Closed beta in China started on October 22, 2017. Due to high demand, it quickly went closed beta last March 2018 worldwide on Android and iOS devices and opened the beta last April.
  2. After only 2 months, they officially released the complete game with minimal bugs.
  3. Following the PUBG-RoS scandal, people have been gossiping about the possible lawsuit Behaviour Digital might file against NetEase. Much to the masses' surprise, however, BHVR already gave consent and is actually working with the team behind Identity V to develop and enhance the asymmetrical horror game experience for players. This was clearly stated in a Youtube video released on Identity V Youtube channel.
  4. Rumor has it that a new hunter is coming soon to the game. Stay tuned!
I did mention above that there are minimal bugs but that doesn't mean there are none. In some very unfortunate cases you might encounter them, here are the known bugs so far:
  1. Certain spots where survivors easily fit but hunters don't -- hunters may have a hard time hitting the survivor inside the area.
  2. Gamekeeper's hook should pass through windows and pallets but not through walls and objects.
  3. Getting stuck while exiting through the dungeon.
  4. Last but not the least, the most commonly reported issue in the game is the ping. Most games have a fair ping, but due to the enormous player base, the pings can escalate as high as 600, maybe even 1k ping. So pack up a lot of patience, maybe take a break once in a while after those games.
Author's judgment on the game:
Definitely worth trying out especially for horror-loving gamers. It's a great game to kill time with, and you'll definitely see yourself coming back for it.

Having owned and played Dead by Daylight for a while, I can see the appeal of the game to mobile gamers and quite honestly, it's more balanced than the Steam counterpart. However, I don't think you'll lose your appetite for either game.

So should you download it? Yes! It's a free game with a massive player base. Take note that it has just started out so you need to be really patient with the high pings and really bad teammate cooperation.

The true horror sometimes lies in the unknown ping spike and suddenly, you're dead. Good luck!

Having hundreds of hours in Dead by Daylight, I didn't expect this game to be good. hahaha. I guess I was wrong. I highly recommend this game, coming from someone who barely plays mobile games ;)
