Japanese RPG Shin Megami Tensei V Will Now Feature Filipino Mythical Creature 'Manananggal'

Atlus, a Japanese video game studio, has maintained a steady presence in the Japanese role-playing game genre with popular series such as Persona and Shin Megami Tensei. With the release of Shin Megami Tensei V today, a full 5 years have passed since the last main game in the series was released, there is certainly cause for celebration.

As the series' central gameplay mechanic, the player must battle a large number of demons, sometimes enlisting their assistance (similar to Pokémon, but more appropriate for mature audiences) in order to progress farther in the game. These demons are frequently based on real-life folklore and tales, and in SMTV, one of our very own characters makes an appearance.

Masayuki Doi, a Character Designer and Demon Designer for Atlus, provides a statement in which he describes the team's aim to have a "horror" character, which the Manananggal wonderfully satisfies. He also stated that, as a result of the design of the Manananggal, the universe of SMT has expanded beyond the realms of "cute" and "awesome."

Shin Megami Tensei V will be available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on November 11, 2021, with a release date of November 11, 2021.
