Jason Mamoa is Going to Star in the New Minecraft Movie

The Hollywood Reporter announced that Jason Mamoa is officially starring in the new Minecraft movie. Jared Hess, the director of Napoleon Dynamite, will direct the project based on the popular video game.


Mary Parent and Roy Lee, the producers of Dune, will produce. Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts serve as executive producers. The video game was created by Sweden's Mojang Studios, and the film was also produced by Mojang's Lydia Winters and Vu Bui.


The Minecraft film has been in development since 2014. When Minecraft creator Notch announced its potential existence on Twitter in order to stay ahead of "leaks," and it has been entangled in various stages of development since. The film have been passed around by a ton of directors. Its release date have been planned around 2018, but many of these directors left and the production was pushed later. Now, they are announcing a new release date this 2022. It was announced to be directed by Jared Hess, director of Napoleon Dynamite.


Minecraft is a 3-D computer game where players can build anything. The game which has been described as like an 'online Lego' involves building blocks and creating structures across different environments and terrains. Set in a virtual world the game involves resource gathering, crafting items, building, and combat.

Since Minecraft's release on 2011, it became a huge success. Continuing to become the best-selling video game title of all time. Having an incredible 238 million sales across all platforms and it still has 140 million monthly active users to this day.
