Recently, there has been significant hype around Counter-Strike 2, and now that Valve has made the new version of CSGO official, the community's hopes have finally been fulfilled. The core gameplay of CSGO is drastically altered despite the fact that it is merely a transfer. Namely, the smoke's physics, server tick rates, and of course, map updates. As a result, the legacy Counter Strike maps undergo enormous change as a result of this new transfer, with different areas receiving varied degrees of upgrades. The new maps in Counter-Strike 2 were divided into three categories in Valve's announcement video: Touchstone, Upgrades, and Overhauls.

Touchstone

The most enduring maps in Counter-Strike are known as touchstones, and these maps also include the core gameplay elements of the game. the majority of Active Duty Pool members. These underwent few changes in the new port, mostly just aesthetic and lighting enhancements.

Upgrades

Upgrades are CSGO maps that have undergone significant lighting and texture changes, making the most of Source 2's enhanced graphics. These maps can be anything from Deathmatch maps to Active Duty Pool maps.

Overhauls

Overhauls are essentially total rebuilds of the older CS maps, whether they are included in CSGO or not. These maps have new structures, lighting, textures, and lighting effects in addition to potential gameplay upgrades.

The whole list of the maps displayed in the film, or at least the ones we have noticed, is provided below.

Active Duty Map Pool

Maps in the Active Duty Pool are ones that have already been utilized in CS:GO competitions and were playable in the Competitive queue. Some can still be played today, while some of them were transferred to the Reserve Pool. Cache, Vertigo, and Anubis are the only old Active Duty Pool maps that didn't make an appearance. At this time, it is unknown whether Valve will remake Cache for Counter-Strike 2. The newest addition to the Pool, Anubis, will probably remain, while Vertigo, which has established itself as a staple since its debut, will probably return.

Dust II

Dust 2 and Counter-Strike go hand in hand. Fans of first-person shooter games are likely to think about Dust 2 when they think of Counter-Strike, and it is evidently present in the most recent version of the game. Categorized as a Touchstone map, Dust 2 features the lighting as its greatest upgrade. Other than that, nothing changes.

Mirage

The map, which was created for esports competition in the Cyberathlete Professional League in CS 1.6, has grown to be a fan favorite in Counter-Strike, having being the only map played in each and every CS major since its release. Naturally, it also reappears in CS2. Mirage is a Touchstone map, and its lighting has undergone the most changes. Other than that, nothing changes.

Train

Well, after being demoted to the Reserve Map Pool in May 2021, the iconic CS 1.6 map made by one of Counter Strike's developers, Train, is now returning. Train is categorized as a Touchstone map, and its lighting has undergone the most changes. Other than that, nothing changes.

Nuke

Since Counter-Strike 1.6, Nuke has been a mainstay in competitive gaming; the switch to Counter-Strike 2 hasn't altered that. The major improvement to Nuke, which is categorized as an Upgrade map, is new lighting physics and textures created specifically for the map.

Overpass

Overpass is one of the most distinctive maps in the pool and one of the few Active Duty Pool maps created particularly for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, so it won't be lost in the switch to Counter-Strike 2. In order to qualify as an Overhaul map, Overpass had to be completely rebuilt from the ground up, including new textures, lighting, structures, and gameplay elements.

Inferno

Inferno is one of the game's oldest maps and debuted in CS 1.1. It is a timeless piece of Counter-Strike art, and sure, it will be included in Counter-Strike 2. It is categorized as an overhaul map since it underwent a thorough reconstruction from the ground up, including improvements to the gameplay as well as textures, lighting, and structures.

Ancient

The spiritual heir to Aztec, one of the newest maps in the Active Duty Pool, was introduced to great criticism and disappointment from players. It will, however, make a second appearance with few modifications. The major improvement to Ancient, which is categorized as an Upgrade map, is new lighting physics and textures created specifically for the map.

Cobblestone

Cobble has supporters in the community who were upset when it was removed in 2019 despite the fact that the general consensus on it is still up for dispute. Nonetheless, it appears to be making a comeback as Source 2 now displays its Terrorist spawn entry. It is unknown what classification Cobblestone gets, but at launch, the entire game will probably feature it.

Deathmatch, Hostage, and Bomb Defusal Map Pool

This section includes a wide variety of maps, from well-known to infamous. There are many maps included, however a few prominent ones that were important to the development of CS but were left out stand out. The following major omissions are listed:
  • Dust
  • Office
  • Agency
  • Assault
  • Aztec
The ones that did show up in the reveal video are listed below.

Tuscan

Here's one for the enthusiasts of the classic era. The Bomb Defusal map was a staple in CS 1.6 and was frequently played in esports competitions during its heyday. But Tuscan was left behind when the focus switched to CSGO. Although it was briefly made available in CSGO, it wasn't intended to be played frequently.
Tuscan falls under the category of an overhaul map, meaning that every aspect of the map—including the gameplay—was completely redesigned from the bottom up.

Italy

Since the beta test of the game in 1999, the entertaining, awkward, and iconic hostage map has been exhibited, albeit with a completely new appearance. It's good to see it updated for a fresh iteration once more, even though it's probably never going to be added to the Active Duty Pool. Italy is categorized as an overhaul map since it underwent a thorough reconstruction from the ground up, including improvements to the gameplay as well as textures, lighting, and architecture.

Baggage

Yes, it's returning. Fans of the classic game Arms Race (also known as Gun Game) will be delighted to see it again. It initially appeared in CSGO, which was created expressly for the Arms Race game style. This map's use as a teaser may indicate that Arms Race will be released alongside the port. The largest upgrade to Baggage, which is categorized as an Upgrade map, is new lighting physics and textures created specifically for the map.

And that sums up every map that was presented and teased in the video. There are still a number of fan favorites missing from the list, but it is apparent that as Valve keeps improving Counter-Strike 2, the old favorites will reappear.
