NCSOFT Reveals Project LLL an open world sci-fi Shooter for PC and Console

Currently under development for console and PC, Project LLL is an upcoming open-world massively multiplayer online third-person shooter that NCSOFT has just released the first gameplay trailer, developer diary, and text interview for. It will debut in every country in 2024.

This new game from NCSoft is set in a post-apocalyptic version of South Korea, the 10th-century Byzantine Empire, and the "23rd century future," and it will reportedly include a pretty sizable open world that combines the three time zones — 30 km of land area to be exact — that is "seamlessly connected to a single environment offering players compelling procedurally created content that reacts appropriately to the player's situation instead of playing preset content."

Isaac Asimov's science fiction novel Foundation and Frank Herbert's Dune were mentioned as influences on the game. The concept of "technology, human justice, and alternate history as demonstrated in Blade Runner, Total Recall, The Man in the High Castle, etc." was a direct inspiration from Philip K. Dick's writing.

In addition to shooting, you'll have the opportunity to drive robots, cars, and helicopters, which will reportedly be incredibly helpful in both battle and world exploration. Although the trailer doesn't show the kind of vehicles you may utilize in action, it appears like you can get a brief glimpse of them at the beginning.

“We wanted to create a new genre that is completely different from the recently popular looter shooter or battle royale,” said project lead Seeder Jaehyun Bae in the text interview. “We want to create a new market that is exclusive to NC with a new IP that incorporates the keywords ‘shooter,’ ‘MMO,’ and ‘open world.’ We are developing a project that combines different play styles and elements from NC’s previous games, and we are very excited to share a sneak peek with our community.”

“LLL is a sci-fi game, but it can also be seen as a game that falls under a sub-genre of alternative history,” Bae explained. “It takes place in a world that started with the idea that the history we know progressed differently due to a particular event in the past. In LLL, a devastated Seoul, the 10th century Byzantine Empire, and the 23rd century are all blended together in the same lore.”

Project LLL will feature predefined characters, unlike other NCSOFT games, each with their own name, backstory, and motivations.
