Fantastic Pixel Castle, a remote-first studio headed by indutry veteran Greg Street, has been established by NetEase Games to develop a triple-A massive multiplayer online game codenamed "Ghost".
Greg Street was the lead systems designer for League of Legends at Riot Games and the lead systems designer for World of Warcraft at Blizzard Entertainment. He is a seasoned game developer who left Riot Games earlier this year, and was very clear that he was developing a new triple-A MMO codenamed "Ghost" with his newly formed studio, Fantastic Pixel Castle. With decades of experience working on titles like World of Warcraft, League of Legends, Guild Wars 2, Fortnite, Overwatch, and Valorant, he is accompanied by a founding team that "has a passion for the massively multiplayer online genre."
In a press release, Fantastic Pixel Castle studio head Greg Street said that “With Fantastic Pixel Castle and Ghost, we want to demonstrate our commitment to open communication and development in front of players. MMOs are arguably one of the most challenging genres of games to make, but we have some big advantages. We are a fully remote studio, allowing us to hire the best game developers, and we plan to stay small, so that we can iterate on our design quickly. We also want to show the game early and often to the community and make sure we are on the right track to incorporate constant feedback. This is possible because NetEase Games is a strategic partner that understands our vision, and gives us the creative autonomy, resources and support to be successful.”
“Fantastic Pixel Castle is bringing some of the best MMO talent available to NetEase Games to develop this original fantasy IP, and they will have our full support to make this vision a reality,” NetEase Games president of global investments and partnerships Simon Zhu added.
"Ghost" is set in a fantasy universe, according to a recent release; however, other than that, not much was disclosed. In contrast to some of the more whimsical fantasy out there, the concept art that was made public along with today's announcement depicts floating islands covered in clouds and mists with cities constructed upon them. Below are some snapshot concept art of "Ghost."
Developers are being hired by Fantastic Pixel Castle to work on the next MMORPG. You can visit its official website for more information. On Tuesday night on Twitter, Street said that although the FPC team is thrilled about what's next, the announcement comes at a difficult moment for the industry, particularly given the widespread layoffs of game developers that are currently taking place.
Next week, Street's studio will have an AMA on Twitch where the Fantastic Pixel Castle founding team will introduce themselves and take questions from the community. On November 8, the AMA will be broadcast live on the official Twitch channel at 2:00 PM ET/1:00 PM PT.
