PlayStation Studios Looks To Expand To Smartphones, Opens Job Hiring For A Head Of Mobile

As detailed in the recent job posting by Playstation Studios on the game forum ResetEra, the job will be based out of San Mateo, California or Los Angeles, California. The successful candidate will be tasked to “promote the vision, mission, strategy for mobile game development within PlayStation Studios" and “lead the development and strategy of PlayStation Studio's mobile gaming”. The new Head of Mobile will also be leading the adaption of some of the company's most popular franchises for mobile.

"As Head of Mobile, you will own and develop the mobile games strategy for PlayStation Studios and help build a foundation for future growth opportunities. You will lead all aspects of the expansion of our game development from consoles and PCs to mobile & Live Services with a focus on successfully adapting PlayStation’s most popular franchises for mobile. You will be responsible for building and scaling a team of mobile leaders and will serve as the Head of this new business unit within PlayStation Studios," according to the job description.

The were no specific mentions of franchises that PlayStation looks to produce for mobile. However, the company has a rich library of games and could pull and release some of its biggest titles such as Uncharted, Gran Turismo, God Of War, Ratchet & Clank and Marvel’s Spider-Man. Also, in PlayStation's acquisition of Evo, they have been looking to diversify its product offerings at the very least.

Although, it may take some time before we see mobile developments to be released under this position. In the job listing, the new Head of Mobile will have to work on a business plan with the PlayStation Studios' Leadership Team for three to five years in order to develop a product roadmap. This business plan will feature growth targets and KPIs as well.

Successful console makers like Nintendo has been operating on mobile in partnership with with developers like Niantic, who is responsible for hit games like Pokemon GO. Third-party publishers like Activision has also seen success with its mobile version of Call of Duty. On the other hand, Blizzard is working on several projects to be released in mobile platforms.

There is no denying that the mobile gaming industry has seen a lot of success, especially during this time of pandemic. And with Sony recently closing the PSN Store on its dedicated handheld gaming system, PlayStation Vita, the company may be looking to use the power of smartphones and turn to mobile as its new avenue for handheld gaming.
