Space Invaders AR, a classic arcade game will be available for iOS and Android in mid-2021

Square Enix has announced that its subsidiary Taito is developing a Space Invaders augmented reality game for mobile devices. Space Invaders, which first appeared in 1978, is one of the most popular and well-known arcade games of all time. This augmented reality version would put those pesky alien spaceships in the same environment as players requested the mobile version of this new AR game.

The most popular mobile AR game is Pokémon Go, which is primarily popular due to its use of real-world maps and the Pokémon brand. Minecraft tried its hand at mobile augmented reality with Minecraft Earth, but Microsoft shelved the project this year.

Square Enix announced the return of one of arcade gaming's most iconic and nostalgia-laced names, revealing a new Space Invaders title that will introduce the old-school baddies into our world through the present-day power of augmented reality, as part of its first-ever "Square Enix Presents" digital video game showcase on Thursday. The game, which is a collaboration with Taito, is still unnamed and has no release date. However, as the following trailer hints, no city will be safe from Space Invaders' "ambitious new vision for the franchise," as Square Enix teases:

“Collaborating with Square Enix Montréal on their bold vision for Space Invaders has been an incredible endeavor,” said Tetsu Yamada, President, and Representative Director, Taito Corporation, of Space Invaders AR.

They added: “As fans of our classic series, they are treating Space Invaders with the utmost care and respect. We are thrilled that the game is coming out with new technology and fresh taste and will further expand the universe of the Space Invaders franchise.”

The game will try to combine a contemporary art style with augmented reality technology. Players will still be defending the planet from invading aliens, but this time with an augmented reality twist. Since the trailer we've seen is more of a celebration of the series, we don't know exactly what that would look like just yet.

“We are extremely inspired by our collaboration with TAITO to re-imagine the Space Invaders franchise in a contemporary way while shaping it to our ambitious vision of what it can be on mobile,” said Patrick Naud, Head of Studio at Square Enix Montréal.

"At Square Enix Montréal, we are huge fans of the franchise, and the team has risen to the challenge of demonstrating how cutting-edge technology can breathe new life into a game as timeless as Space Invaders," they continued.

At some point, Space Invaders AR will be available on the App Store and Google Play. At this time, there's no word on a release date or pricing. Alternatively, interested players can sign up for updates on the game's website by registering your interest.
