Top Clans 2020 Dota 2: Story So Far

The first four days of the Top Clans 2020 Dota 2 Group Stage are over, and competition couldn’t have gotten fiercer. No team arrived on top as clear winners, as all have tasted defeat from one of their opponents. Currently four teams stand on top of their respective groups with 4 points apiece.

Two of them are the Filipino teams Execration (XctN) and Neon Esports who have locked a firm grip in Group B. The other two teams in their group, Galaxy Racer (GXR) and Vice Esports, will have to play catch up on their remaining matches this Friday, October 9. Regardless of the results, unfortunately, Vice will be eliminated from the tournament, having not enough points to secure them a spot.

Their game against Neon will be vital, as Neon will have to win their games to secure their playoffs berth. Losing in this matchup will mean Neon’s fate will depend on the results of GXR and XctN’s series. Speaking of which, GXR will have two sweep Execration to take their place for themselves. There’s a possibility of a three-way tie happening if GXR sweeps XctN and Neon loses to Vice, with all three teams ending up with 4 points each. Meanwhile, XctN can secure their position by simply winning a single game in their Bo2 against GXR, closing off all hopes for GXR in staging a comeback.

The other two top teams can be found in Group A, also with 4 points each. Fighting against a sea of Filipino teams in their group, Malaysia’s IO Dota 2 and Thailand’s Motivate.Trust Gaming (MG.Trust), both with 4 points. Falling just shortly behind is Adroit Esports with 2 points. The matchup on Thursday will have IO Dota 2 facing MG.Trust. The results of this series won’t matter if Adroit Esports isn’t able to sweep Bren Esports. But if Adroit does, then MG.Trust and IO Dota 2 will have to sweep their opponent to secure their slot in the tournament. Going 1-1 will also lead to a three-way-tie, in which Adroit will have the opportunity to wrest control of the top spot away from the current topnotchers.

The stakes are very high, and six teams are still in contention for the playoffs. Pressure is starting to build up, and we’re sure to see some explosive plays this coming week for the remaining matches of the Dota 2 Group Stage. Will the current top 2 teams of each group be able to hold onto their positions, or will the third placers be able to score an upset and unexpectedly come from behind?
