What were your goals when designing Ruination?

When we decided that we were going to take part in the Rise of the Sentinels event, one of our most important goals was creating skins that felt authentic to League of Legends but also cool to VALORANT players who aren’t familiar with League at all. This meant our Ruination skins should feel really dark, edgy, and corrupted, but also borrow elements from League of Legends that League fans would appreciate. One of these elements was designing the Blade of the Ruined King, which is our first two-handed sword. The sword is cool on its own, but it’s also a very iconic item that’s been in League of Legends for many years (and is now Viego’s sword). Another notable element we added from League is how each weapon has a tie back to a Ruined League champion. The Phantom is Viego, the Ghost is Gwen, the Spectre is Karma, the Guardian is Shyvana, and the melee is Draven. As a League player, these are really cool references that I appreciated and hope other League players love, and I hope non-League players feel like each weapon has a distinct identity thanks to our unique approach to audio. - Preeti Khanolkar, Senior Producer

What did you take inspiration from / any notable concepts you wanted to convey with Ruination?

For over a year, we worked very closely with leads from the League of Legends team to ensure that our Ruination skins felt like they were cohesive with League’s Rise of the Sentinels content. This meant collaborating with them on the visual language for the black mist effects, shape language of the weapons, and the audio. I’d have weekly meetings with the other art leads on each game to see what they were creating and share our work on VALORANT with them, which led to a lot of really great creative collaboration. Probably the best thing that came out of this is the specific sword design we used for the Blade of the Ruined King, which is a new and unique design. Another example of this is how our color variants for the Ruination skins match the color variants that League has used on their color variants. We loved these so much that our team put in some extra work to add variants to the Blade of the Ruined King melee since we know this is something players have wanted for a long time. - Sean Marino, Art Lead

Any unexpected challenges or novelty stories you'd like to share when designing Ruination?

We wanted the Finisher to really feel extra grandiose while tying back to League’s Ruination thematic. This meant doing something bigger than our previous Finishers, so relying on the black mist alone wasn’t enough even when we had the effect circulate throughout the sky. As we brainstormed ideas, we had the idea to have the victim succumb to the corruption of the black mist and manifest with Viego’s crown atop their head. I’d consider the crown kind of an easter egg, and there are a few other small things we’ve done that we hope League players notice and appreciate - Sean Marino, Art Lead
