WWE 2K22 game premieres at WrestleMania 37

Guild of Guardians
WWE fans were treated to a surprise reveal of the WWE 2K22 video game at WrestleMania 37. The WWE 2K22 teaser trailer had some amazing graphics and animations in a match between Cesaro and Rey Mysterio, but not much else was seen. Many thought that the WWE 2K22 teaser trailer will be representative of how the game will appear on next-generation consoles including the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but a recent report suggests that the game would not even have a proper next-gen release.

This rumor comes from ItzPHSavageWolf's Twitter entry. They appear to have seen a commercial for WWE 2K22 that stated that the game was only available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. They also pointed out that the WWE 2K22 teaser trailer released on the PlayStation YouTube channel originally listed the game as a PS5 version, but later changed its mind and listed it as a PlayStation 4 update. At the time of publishing, 2K Sports had yet to comment on the issue, and it had also yet to list any forums for WWE 2K22.

The lack of a decent next-gen port would undoubtedly irritate some WWE 2K22 players, as the game's release date is unlikely to be until the fall of this year. There are a variety of explanations why this decision will be taken. One reason could be the production team's attempt to regain favor after the disappointing launch of WWE 2K20, and dividing the time between current-gen and next-gen iterations of the title could have made it a much more challenging task.

Another cause may be the general scarcity of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles in people's homes at this time. Although both consoles have been hugely successful in terms of revenue, it seems that a large majority of them have been snatched up by scalpers, as shown by the shockingly poor software sales for PS5 titles. With PS5 and Xbox Series X shortages set to last for the near future, it's understandable that the developers would want to concentrate their energies on rendering WWE 2K22 for PS4 and Xbox One as good as possible.

WWE 2K22 is launching later this year.
